HAZINGPREVENTION.ORG™ ANNOUNCES 2018 ANTI-HAZING HERO AWARD WINNERS
HazingPrevention.Org™ (HPO) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2018 Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award. The award recognizes nominated individuals who stood up to hazing in their organizations, at their schools and campuses, and those who have helped educate others about the dangers of hazing. The 2018 Awards are made possible with support from Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Fraternal Law Partners, and Hank Nuwer.
The award is named in honor of Hank Nuwer, a long-time anti-hazing advocate, historical researcher, author of numerous books on hazing, and journalist.
Three Selected for 2018 Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Awards:
JIM & EVELYN PIAZZA
Jim and Evelyn Piazza, parents of Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old sophomore engineering student at Penn State University, became the tragic face of the hazing epidemic this past year when Timothy died February 4, 2017, as a result of fraternity hazing. Since their son’s death, Jim & Evelyn have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the dangers of hazing, including speaking nationally through the media, numerous speaking engagements with groups on campuses nationwide, advocating for federal and state laws, reform of policies and procedures at the university and national organizational level, and helped found PUSH, an organization representing parents who have lost children to hazing.
DEVON A. MARRETT
Devon served as a Drum Major with the Florida A&M University Marching 100 band program for two years. He stopped participating in the band one semester before the tragic hazing death of fellow drum major, Robert Champion. After the incident, Devon enrolled in the university’s Community Psychology program and worked as a member of the Anti-Hazing Research Initiative grant. Upon completion of the program, Devon began delivering public speeches and educational workshops to younger students in an effort to prevent this destructive practice from continuing. He is currently the Founder and CEO of DM Empowerment, providing student leadership development, college readiness preparation, marching band drum major training, and hazing prevention education to high school students. He works at Florida International University, Dept. of Student Access & Success, and is a graduate of the HazingPrevention.Org Institute.
