We were horrified to learn details of the hazing incident that has been reported at Louisiana State University (LSU), especially in light of the death of Max Gruver on the same campus in 2017. With the reports today of nine members of LSU’s Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity having been arrested and accused of hazing and other related offenses, this is a rather rare, and we hope increasing, number of criminal charges being brought forth without a related death occurring, and also a reflection of the strengthened hazing laws in that state.
We commend the commitment from LSU leadership for student safety after Max’s death, the swift action of local officials, and also on behalf of the increasing number of students who are willing to report hazing when they see it occurring. Shining a light on this issue, and not sweeping events under the rugs, will save lives and increase the safety of students nationwide.
