Zeta Tau Alpha Award for Innovation in Campus Hazing Prevention & Education

Award Announcement Press Release

Zeta Tau Alpha has committed to financial sponsorship of the award for the next five years to help address this complex issue facing higher education. With this award, ZTA and HazingPrevention.Org seek to:

  • Motivate higher education stakeholders to counter hazing on their campuses;
  • Recognize and reward the good work of campuses that are using true prevention practices effectively;
  • Encourage campuses to initiate comprehensive efforts to combat hazing;
  • Promote the most effective practices based
  • on the criteria set forth;
  • Provide campus-based personnel with leverage to create campus buy-in for such efforts.

The award will recognize one campus whose efforts are:

  • Created through collaboration across the institution;
  • Holistic in nature, focused on a wide range of audiences both within and external to the campus;
  • Supported by senior-level administration with a plan for institutionalization and on-going commitment;
  • Grounded in research and proven prevention practices, and assessed for future evolution and improvement;
  • Included in short and long-term planning initiatives for wellness and community safety;
  • Strategic about how the prize money will be used to further these efforts.

One $10,000 prize will be awarded to the collegiate institution that most excels in the designated criteria for hazing prevention and intervention programming.

Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award

Do you know someone who has been heroic enough to expose hazing, speak out against this problem, or in some way work to combat this dangerous practice? Then nominate them for the Anti-Hazing Hero Award. Awards will be given in both student and non-student categories, and recipients will receive a cash prize. Phi Delta Theta  has sponsored these awards for the past three years. 

This award is named for Associate Professor Hank Nuwer, a long-time anti-hazing journalist and author of four books on the subject. He is currently also serving as a member of the board of directors for HazingPrevention.Org. To read more about Mr. Nuwer, and his work go here

National Hazing Prevention Week Essay Contest
Theme: "Defining Hazing & Taking Action"

Essays will be accepted from students, parents, administrators, advisors, etc. Essays should be typed, double-spaced and not longer than 1000 words. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three essays: 1st - $100, 2nd - $75, 3rd - $50.

National Hazing Prevention Week Photo Contest

Submit your best photo from NHPW 2009 or 2010 along with a story of less than 200 words describing the events taking place in the photo and the impact of the activity in regard to hazing prevention. Photos should be of ACTIVITIES and/or PEOPLE. The top three photos with stories will be awarded cash prizes along with being published in our fall newsletter. This year's contest is sponsored by Alpha Phi.

Essay & Photo Contest Guidelines

  • All entries must be received by the contest deadline of November 1, 2010 to be considered.
  • Entries must follow the contest guidelines in terms of length, adherence to theme/topic, and portrayal of an anti-hazing stance.
  • Entrants understand that all photos and accompanying stories submitted become property of HazingPrevention.Org and may be used in promotional materials either printed or web-based. Owners retain their own rights to the photos and may use them as they wish, but may not restrict HPO from also using the photos for our own promotional purposes.
  • Essays also become the property of HPO and may be used in promotional materials either print or web-based. If requested at the time of submission by the author, certain identifying details may be removed from the essay before it is published.
  • Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three photos/essays in the following amounts: 1stnd place $75, 3rd place $50.  Winners will be selected no more than two months following the submission deadline and checks will be mailed no more than four months after the deadline.
  • The judging and selection process is at the sole discretion of HazingPrevention.Org and the committee(s) chosen for such purpose. Submissions may be disqualified for any reason the committee sees fit, and the selection process will remain confidential.
  • Essays will be judged based upon the following criteria: adherence to theme, grammar/spelling, clarity of message, and creativity/uniqueness of message.
  • Photos will be judged based upon the following criteria: composition, depiction of the event described, diversity represented, and uniqueness or appropriateness of the event displayed.

Anti-Hazing Hero Award Guidelines

  • All nominations must be received by the November 1, 2010 deadline to be considered.
  • Nominations must be complete in terms of the information requested – particularly references who can verify accuracy of the information presented. All finalists for the award recognition will have the information in the nomination verified by both references and possibly through other avenues as well.
  • All nominations become property of HazingPrevention.Org and may be used in promotional materials either printed or web-based.
  • Five award-winners are recognized each year, and nominees can be teachers, parents, students (at any level), coaches, advisors or anyone who has taken a stand against hazing.
  • Nominations will be considered based upon the following criteria: the impact or change initiated credibility and facts shared, anti-hazing stance taken and the inspirational quality of the nomination.
  • The selection process is at the sole discretion of HazingPrevention.Org and the committee(s) chosen for such purpose. Nominations may be disqualified for any reason the committee sees fit, and the selection process will be kept confidential.
  • If selected, winners will be asked to submit a photo, and to make themselves available for press interviews. Anti-Hazing Heroes will be announced no later than two months following the submission deadline, and plaques/cash prizes will be mailed no later than four months following the deadline.
